New Delhi: Tihar jail in Delhi is India's biggest jail with modern amenities.

Smalltime crooks, murderers, rapists, conmen, dowry case accused, drug traffickers - all rub shoulders inside this sprawling jail.

Though there are many cases of violence and torture inside this jail, the brighter side involves several correctional measures taken by jail authorities.

The motive of officials here is not to treat them like criminals but to motivate them to lead a better life and wean them away from the world of crime.
 
Tihar jail was set up in 1958 with a few hundred criminals but now it has covered 4 hundred acres of land housing thousands of criminals and with much more rehabilitation activities for them.
 
There are many activities which help the prisoners boost their morale and indulge their minds in more social activities.



1. Drug de-addiction center: It opened in 2002 inside the jail itself where all the inmates were taken for a preliminary check up and those who were either drug addicts or drug abusers were retained there for treatment. Many inmates have benefited from this and got rid of their addictions and even want to live a better life after their terms are over.
