The lights of the police station were switched off and Mathura was dragged into the bathroom by one of the accused. He there checked her underwear and then dragged her to the back side of the chowki and raped her. Both took turns to rape her.
A case was lodged and two years later, in 1974, a sessions court freed the accused. The court observed that "Mathura was habituated to sexual intercourse, her consent was voluntary; under the circumstances only sexual intercourse could be proved and not rape".
