On the fateful day, Kunjum had gone to offer Navratri prayers at the farmhouse. According to Surendra, he handed over the keys to the farmhouse to Kunjum and left for Noida. Right after offering the prayer, Kunjum was attacked by the hired killers. A bottle was first smashed on her head and then she was brutally stabbed multiple times.




At Kunjum's cremation, Sharma came out on parole. With teary eyes he draped a red saree around Kunjum's body and put vermillion on her forehead, a Hindu custom followed during marriage.




Investigations were launched which later alleged that Surendra had carried out the crime on Sharma's instructions. Kunjum had known a lot about Shrama which became the alleged reason behind her murder.




The trail went on and in 2008 Sharma was convicted by Delhi Court for hatching a conspiracy to kill Kunjum Budhiraj. Sharma told that he would appeal against the conviction in Delhi High Court and as a result of which, Sharma was acquitted in 2009.
