Dhananjoy was shattered. During his last days, the shocked rapist cum murderer would have cursed the moment when his mind would have generated the thought of raping the innocent Hetal. .

His agony was not hidden from anyone. The jail officials tried to give him a comforting shoulder by inviting him for lunch with the welfare officer of the jail. He had lunch with them where his favourite Bengali dishes were served.






He wished to donate his body after his death for a cause but doctors had to decline the request quoting a legal provision saying that a death row convict's kidneys cannot be used. Also, the rest of  his body was never used due to absence of consent from his family who never came forward to claim his body.





On the final day, he took his  bath and asked for water. Clad in a white kurta-pyjama, he read Gita and had tea. He walked towards the gallows thinking that he was punished because he was poor.




A hood covered his head and he was hanged till death on August 14, 2004 at Alipore central jail in Kolkata.

His last words were ``I am innocent, God bless you''.
