The Congress party-led ruling coalition leads a general election but was far short of a parliamentary majority, according to exit polls released after the final day of voting on Wednesday.
Two exit polls by Star News television and India TV released at the end of the month-long election suggested the Congress-led coalition was marginally ahead of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance.
Votes will be counted on Saturday and a hung parliament means the two major groupings will vie for support of smaller parties to form a government.
