Barbie maker Mattel launched their first-ever hijab-wearing doll in honour of an American-Muslim Olympic Fencer, Ibtihaj Muhammad. She is the first U.S. Olympic athlete to participate in the competition wearing the religious headscarf. The new doll is part of Barbie's shero (female hero) line which aims at breaking barriers and celebrate the victory of those women who have defied stereotypes. This is meant to inspire next generation.
''Thank you Mattel for announcing me as the newest member of the Barbie Shero family! The Barbie Shero Program recognizes women who break boundaries to inspire the next generation of girls and I am so excited to join this incredible group of women. I’m proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come true,'' wrote Ibtihaj on Twitter and Instagram.
The athlete also worked with the designers to help create the doll. The new Barbie has been styled in an all white fencing outfit with sword and helmet. Unlike petite Barbie that we have usually seen, the hijab-clad doll's body has an athletic built. The Barbie even has eye-liner similar to that of Ibtihaj.
Last year Mattel launched Barbie inspired by plus-size model Ashley Graham to laud her confidence.
