Google Doodle has paid tribute to Padma Shree awardee and Bengali author Mahasweta Devi on her 92nd birth anniversary. The lady was honoured with Sahitya Akademi award in 1979. She wrote her first novel in 1956, titled, Jhansir Rani, which a biography of the Rani of Jhansi. Her work includes, Hajar Churashir Ma, Rudali, and Chotti Munda Evam Tar Tir. Today’s Google Doodle is the reminder of the writer’s love for literature. Mahasweta Devi penned down 100 novels and 20 collections of short stories.
The lady hailed from the family of some prolific writers. Her father and mother were poets and novelists. Her brother was one of the finest filmmakers of Bengal and her husband was a left-wing playwright and actor. Mahasweta Devi worked as an English lecturer at a Kolkata university. In 1984, she took retirement to concentrate on her writing.
She was also bestowed with Padmashri, Padma Vibhushan awards. The lady also worked for the welfare of tribal in different parts of India. The writings of the lady have been translated to different languages so that the people can witness her great work. Mahasweta Devi dies at the age of 90 July 28, 2016 in Kolkata, West Bengal.
