New Delhi: Chennai was hit by havoc as the city got drenched in record breaking rains, which is being termed the heaviest in 100 years. The city came to a standstill with flooding in numerous roads, neighbourhoods, train tracks and airport runways, along with lack of power supply and transport services.

While daily life crippled in Tamil Nadu's capital, for the first time in 137 years the newspaper ‘The Hindu' wasn't published. One of India's oldest newspaper which was first published in 1878, did not take out their edition on Wednesday, 02 December 2015 as workers could not reach the press.

The Hindu, which is headquartered in Chennai is also published in 17 other cities. N Murali, the paper's publisher, told a leading daily that this is the first time that the newspaper wasn't published.

"Our Maraimalainagar township was not accessible for the people who run the plant. So, none of our staff could reach the plant. It is located about 30kms (18 miles) from the city in Maraimalainagar," Mr Murali told the daily.

"The printing press plant is large so we put it up outside the city. Even if we had printed the paper, I doubt if it could have been distributed in the city," he added.

While The Hindu put a halt to its publication, other dailies like Times of India, the Deccan Chronicle and the New Indian Express were printed. Although, it is not quite clear if the newspapers were distributed to the readers.
