Naresh Goyal, the founding chairman of Jet Airways, has agreed to quit, amidst talks of airlines non-repayment of dues to lessors, the Times of India reports.
The newspaper reports that Goyal’s stepping away will help Jet Airways foreign partner, Etihad group to move in.
Jet Airways on Thursday said that it has grounded six more aircraft, taking the total to 19, over its non-repayment of dues. "Further to our letter dated 27 February 2019, we now write to inform you that an additional six aircraft have been grounded due to non-payment of amounts outstanding to lessors under their respective lease agreements," the airline said in a regulatory filing on Thursday, IANS reported.
On Wednesday, the airline had informed the stock exchanges that it had grounded a total of 13 aircraft. The additional grounding of six more that came on Thursday, might impact around 85 flights.
The latest move seems to have affected many passengers as they took to Twitter to report the sudden cancellation of their flights.
Twitter user Piyush who goes by the twitter handle @FelixUnlucky wrote: “Hey @jetairways mind explaining to me why my flight was cancelled without any prior notice? And why haven't you provided me with an alternative travel option? And your Customer Care is unreachable for the past 6 hours. Is this what you call customer service? #JetAirways”
Jet Airways official twitter account meanwhile wrote to many aggrieved customers saying they were “…experiencing extremely high call volumes at our Contact Centre for change and cancellation requests…”. Jet Airways was also providing its users with a link to their Disruption Assistance page.
Indiatvnews.com has reached out to the Jet Airways for an official response but are yet to receive one. We will update this story as and when we get a response.
