China seeks WTO authorisation to impose sanctions on US goods

In view of the United States failing to comply with a ruling of the World Trade Organization (WTO), China has asked for WTO authorisation for imposition of an annual trade sanction of $7 billion on US goods, revealed documents published by the organisation on Tuesday.

According to a document circulated to all members of the WTO, China has requested authorization from WTO's Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) to "suspend concessions or other obligations" with respect to the US "at a level equivalent to the nullification or impairment suffered."

The move followed the failure of the US to comply with the recommendations and rulings of the DSB.

China considers that "no substantive effort and progress has been made" by the US to fulfill its implementation obligation.

The level of nullification or impairment totals approximately $7.043 billion annually.

China had won a WTO ruling in 2016, over a dispute on certain methodologies applied by the US during its anti-dumping proceedings.

An appeal last year had later confirmed the ruling.
