Market Opening Bell: Sensex surges over 400 points, Nifty above 22,600, all sectoral indices in green

Market Opening Bell: Earlier, Gift Nifty, an early indicator for equity market indices, indicated a flat start for the Nifty 50, which opened slightly lower at 22,736.50 against the previous close of 22,741 on Monday.

Market Opening Bell: Indian benchmark indices opened higher on Tuesday, i.e. March 18, 2025, amid positive global cues. The 30-share BSE Sensex opened at 74,169.95, while the NSE Nifty 50 started the session at 22,662.25.  

There was a gain of 438.71 points or 0.59 per cent on the Sensex in the opening trade. Nifty50 was up by 153.5 points or 0.68 per cent. The Sensex closed at 74,169.95 and Nifty 50 at 22,508.75 in the last trading session on Monday. 

From the Sensex pack, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Adani Porta and HDFC Bank were among the biggest gainers in the opening trade, with IndusInd gaining 1.42 per cent. On the other hand, only two stocks were in the red in the opening trade - Sun Pharma and Nestle India. 

In early trade, 2,038 stocks in the Nifty pack were trading in the green, while 359 were trading in the green. 44 stocks remained unchanged. 

What does Gift Nifty indicate?

Earlier, Gift Nifty, an early indicator for equity market indices, indicated a flat start for the Nifty 50, which opened slightly lower at 22,736.50 against the previous close of 22,741 on Monday. 

Asian and Global Markets Today

Meanwhile, Asian markets traded in green today as the US stock market climbed on Monday. 

The S&P 500 rose 0.6 per cent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 353 points, or 0.9 per cent. The Nasdaq composite was up 0.3 per cent.

At the time of writing the news, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was up by 454.65 points or 1.88 per cent, and Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 529.41 points or 1.42 per cent. On the other hand, South Korea’s Kospi was up by 1.44 points or 0.06 per cent. Also, China's Shanghai Composite was in the green.  

 
How did individual sectors perform?

Major Nifty sectoral indices traded in the green in the opening trade today. The Nifty Metal was up 0.64 percent. Similarly, the Nifty Bank Index gained 0.61 per cent, and the Nifty Realty jumped 0.87 per cent.
