New Delhi: Mobile messaging service WhatsApp has reportedly started rolling out the much awaited voice calling feature to a few users in India through invitation only. The feature is restricted to Android users with the latest version 2.11.508 of the messenger app.
The invite-only basically means that users will get a call through WhatsApp from someone who already has the feature updated.
The feature is restricted to Android only and you will need the updated 2.11.508 version to access the app.
A Reddit user first reported the new voice calling feature on his Nexus 5 device running the latest Android lollipop OS.
The image posted by him suggests that the interface is divided up into three tabs — calls, chats, and contacts — and users can switch between them with just a tap. The app keeps a record of recent WhatsApp calls as well.
Reports suggest that the voice calling feature is included in WhatsApp's 2.11.508 version, which has not yet made its way to Google's Play Store. The upgraded version, however, can be downloaded and installed on your phone from the company's website.
WhatsApp's voice-calling roll-out comes after Hike rolled out for free voice-calling on 2G and 3G for their app.
WhatsApp is clearly preparing for its release with a limited trial run, so unless it runs into any issues, a larger rollout to all users should happen in the very near future.
