New Delhi: The Delhi government has decided to create an urban transport fund by imposing a cess of Re.1 on the purchase of every packet of cigarettes and bottle of liquor, said an official.
This was recommended by a high-powered committee set up by Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung after a United Nations report said that Delhi has the worst air pollution in the world, said an official.
Besides, the government said the Pollution Under Control (PUC) norms for all vehicles plying in Delhi are to be tightened.
The Delhi Traffic Police will make it mandatory for all vehicles to display a valid PUC sticker on the vehicle.
The government will also introduce non-polluting battery operated vehicles for last mile connectivity to metro stations and public transport.
