Visakhapatnam, Oct 29: SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, launched its first direct flight between Singapore and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday.
“With introduction of the service, which will run thrice a week, SilkAir became the first airline to provide non-stop international air connectivity from Visakhapatnam,” said SilkAir Chief Executive Leslie Thng.
The first flight connecting Visakhapatnam with Singapore landed here on Sunday evening. It is also the first direct international flight from the city.
Visakhapatnam was the eighth destination of SilkAir in India besides Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram.
The new Visakhapatnam services are conveniently connected via Singapore with more than 90 international cities in the joint Singapore Airline-SilkAir network, Thng said.
The passengers alighted from the flight were welcomed by a host of government officials and other dignitaries on the occasion.
