Kolkata: Sahara India, which has diversified interests, had plans to invest in West Bengal, its chief Subroto Roy said.

"We plan to set up a 500-bed hospital and a medical college near Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas," Roy told reporters here.

Stating that the investment involved was Rs 400 crore, Roy said that the company needed 500 acre and had already started buying.

"We are also interested in a good tourism project in the state. We have earmarked land close to Kolkata," he said.

"I had personally wanted to do something for the state. The most important point is that any investor wants to feel comfortable, which comes from the welcoming gesture," he said.

He compared states like Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where investors feel that comfort factor.

"The Sunderbans tourism project was stalled because of environment issues following which the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government became shaky," he said.

"I also had long chat with Mamata Banerjee before she became the chief minister. I must say she was very responsive. But there was no call after she became the chief minister. I feel that I am not needed here," he said.

Sahara was also looking at setting up of a special township in the state for which 1000 acre was required.
