8 misconceptions and facts about engine oils

It is rightly said that ‘Engine Oil' is a lifeline of your vehicle. It is the engine oil, which saves the engine against corrosion, keep them sludge free and help them to run smoothly.

People around the world follow some of the prominent practices which are actually myths. Most of the people are unaware of the problems occur due to low-quality additives and follow common misconceptions.

Here we are trying to help you with some of the engine oil myths that can help your vehicle to perform well in the long run.

1.Myth: You do not need to opt for higher quality lubricants as the current oil is performing good and has not created any issues yet.

Fact: Low-quality engine oils harms the engine in the long run. A good performing engine oil might start corroding once the harmful contaminants get accumulated in engine's lubricant system. Professionals always advise to go for a high quality oil for maximum protection.

2. Myth: Good Quality engine oils leaks from the seals of older vehicles

Fact: High-quality engine oils are expert tested and manufacturer approved for better performance. Hence, good quality engine oils never leak if the engine condition is good regardless the age of the engine.

3. Myth: You don't need to use good quality lubricants if the engine has passed the manufacturer's warranty.

Fact: The older the engine, the more care it needs. Older engines require better quality lubricants to protect crucial parts, which ensures the life of an engine. These engines are more chances of wearing and tearing.

4. Myth: Synthetic engine oils are destined for new vehicles

Fact: Higher quality engine oils performs the same way in both new and old vehicles.

5. Myth: Engine Oil can create sludge in the engine

Fact: Yes, it is true in case of poor quality engine oils as they create sludge by accumulating dirt, partially burned fuel, oxidized motor oil, leaked coolant and condensed water vapor. On the other hand, good quality engine oil help to keep these contaminants away.

6. Myths: OEM recommended engine oil change intervals are conservative and it is safe to extend the time a bit between oil changes.

Facts: Yes, it is true at some extent. We can extend the time a bit but not much. For  instance, if OEM given interval is 5000kms, in that case, user can extend it to 6000kms, but not more than that, this will let the engine work properly, whereas, if you extend the interval time and get the oil change at 8000Kms, it will most likely to affect the engine performance in the long run.

Manufacturers suggest interval should be followed for the long life of the engine.

7. Myth: You can decide if the oil needs to be changed by looking at it, or by smell.

Fact: It is true, you can understand whether your vehicle needs an oil change just by looking at it. A good quality engine oil will change its colour if it is doing the job right. It grabs the soot, dirt and other contaminants in suspension until you change it.

8.Myth: Thicker Motor Oil is good and increases the life of the engine.

Fact: Manufacturer recommends lighter viscosity grades of oil that increase the fuel economy. Oils with less viscosity reduce the internal friction therefore, it requires less energy to pump it in the engine.
