New Delhi: After success of wireless data transmission technology Wi-Fi, scientists are coming with a new age technology Li-Fi.

'Li-Fi' is a lot faster than what we are currently getting from Wi-Fi. In Lab conditions, researchers claimed to achieve the speeds of 224 gigabits per second by testing Li-Fi technology.

Researchers believe that Li-Fi is capable of sending data up to 1GB per second which is 100 times quicker than average Wi-Fi networks.

The technology is invented by researcher 'Harald Haas' from the University of Edinburgh and has been tested in offices and industrial environment.

What is Li-Fi?

A wireless technology is similar to Wi-Fi, but much faster than it. Li-Fi uses 'visible light communication' (VLC) to allow data to be sent at high speed.

Benefits:

The most significant advantage is the speed of this technology which is 100 times faster than Wi-Fi. At that speed, a high-definition film could be downloaded in a matter of seconds.

Working:

Li-Fi transfers binary information over light emissions. The new technology relies on visual spectrum instead of radio waves. It uses light bulbs to carry data with the help of bulb's flash light.

Reportedly, Haas and his team have already launched PureLiFi, a company that offers a secure wireless internet access with a capacity of 11.5 MB per second.

French tech company Oledcomm is working to install Li-Fi technology in local hospitals.

Sources claimed that Li-Fi technology could be launch for consumers within the next three to four years allowing people to access internet using light bulbs in their homes.
