New Delhi: More than three decades since its inception, India's second largest software firm Infosys has got its first non-founder chief executive officer in Vishal Sikka. He replaces S D Shibulal, last among the co-founders to hold the CEO post.On June 12, 2014, at the Bangalore headquarters of the $8.2 billion firm, N.R. Narayana Murthy, the 67-year-old co-founder and executive chairman, announced that after 33 years, he and the other two remaining co-founders — S. Gopalakrishnan, who serves as executive vice chairman, and CEO S.D. In 1981, Murthy founded Infosys Technologies along with six of his friends. Since none of them had the money to start the company, luckily his wife Sudha Murthy, who was an engineer with Tata Industries, gave him Rs 10,000 to start the company. 2. Narayana Murthy was born on 20 August 1946 to Sri R H Kulkarni and Vimala Kulkarni at Mysore, in Mysore, Karnataka. He got a degree in Electrical Engineering from Mysore University, and later studied Computer Science at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kanpur. He has also worked at IIM Ahmedabad as chief systems programmer before Infosys.3. Murthy served as the CEO of Infosys for 21 years, from 1981 to 2002, later succeeded by co-founder Nandan Nilekani in 2002. He was the chairman of the board from 2002 to 2006, after which he became Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor. In August 2011, he retired from the company, taking the title Chairman Emeritus.4. Infosys wasn't NR Narayana Murthy's first entrepreneurial venture. It was a company called Softronics, an IT consulting firm that Murthy founded in Pune in 1976.6. Murthy, a self proclaimed socialist in the mid '70s was jailed for 72 hours in Bulgaria. The experience taught him that entrepreneurship and job creation is the way to alleviate poverty.7. In a poll conducted by Asiaweek, he was adjudged one of the 50 most powerful people in Asia for 2000. Fifty percent of the respondents in an online poll conducted by The Economic Times voted him the best CEO of India. 8. According to him, the role model that inspired his career were: “: “Those days our role models were our teachers, both in school and university. They taught us to be inquisitive and articulate. You have to imagine a lower middle class family in a district headquarters in the '60s. My father used to tell us about the importance of putting public good before private good; mother would talk about sacrifice and truth. Beyond the basic values of life they didn't discuss too much about our careers.”9. When asked what has instilled the quality of leadership in him, he said “My father ... was a great fan of Western classical music. On Sundays, he used to play music for an hour. One day I asked him: why should I listen to this alien music? He said: What appeals to me is that in a symphony there are over 100 people, each of whom is a maestro, but they come together as a team to play according to a script under this conductor and produce something divine.
