Samsung Galaxy S4The Samsung Galaxy S4 offers a powerful combination of great specs and feature packed software that makes gorgeous Super-AMOLED HD Galaxy S4 a great package.While the 1.9GHz quad-core processor is no longer one of the fastest on the market it still places the Galaxy S4 ahead of others. So no matter what tasks you throw at the S4, it will guzzle it down and asked for seconds.Built-wise, though the body of the phone is still plastic, it doesn't feel offensively cheap. Its build quality is quite okay though. The Gorilla Glass 3 protective screen, does its job, with no visible marks left on the screen when used roughly. The S4 has retained its physical home button as just one of three physical controls on the whole phone, lining up alongside the power/sleep button and the customary volume toggle. The S4's power/sleep button is handily located towards the top of the handset's right hand side. Similarly, while the microUSB port, used for charging, is located at the base, a 3.5mm audio jack sits on top, and microSD and SIM card slots reside under the plastic rear.Display quality wise, the 1080p screen which offers 1920 x 1080 resolution, giving 441 pixels per inch, is best among the lot. That's a higher resolution than Apple's iPhone, and it beats pretty much everything else on the market too. In the current environment 1080p displays are becoming the norm for high-end Android devices. The text and images in the S4 appears to be sharp and crisp, with not even a trace of pixelisation creeping in. Viewing angles are good and overall Samsung has maintained a good balance between accuracy and richness.The Samsung Galaxy S4 camera, takes good photos offering rich colors and a really good level of detail. While the S4 camera excels at daylight shots, low-light shots are the Galaxy S4 camera's major weakness. Often noise creeps in low-light conditions. The camera app of Galaxy S4 offers you the option to do tricks including Cinemagram like Animated photo mode, an Eraser mode to delete moving objects from five consecutive photos, Drama shot that takes multiple photos of a moving object and merges them all to denote action, and Best face that allows selecting the best face shot in group photos, in addition to the usual Burst mode that takes 20 continuous shots, HDR mode and Panorama mode. The phone also allows you to shoot through both the front and rear lenses simultaneously and put a stamp-sized photo of yours in a photo that you're clicking with the rear camera.The Samsung Galaxy S4 runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, the latest iteration of the OS and TouchWiz Nature UX, Samsung's own UI that includes custom apps in addition to a skinned interface.The Samsung Galaxy S4 is powered by Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa processor which is basically a set of two quad-core processors- a 1.2GHz Cortex A7 quad-core processor and a 1.6GHz Cortex A15 quad-core processor that work together to optimise processing. It offers 2GB RAM onboard, and a PowerVR SGX 544MP chip for processing graphics.The Samsung Galaxy S4 comes with a 2600mAh battery that can easily last a whole day. 4. Samsung Galaxy Note 3Samsung GALAXY Note 3 is an updated version of the Samsung GALAXY Note 2 with surprising additions. Design-wise, the Note 3 looks much more similar to the first-generation Note than the Note II, which was more curved. On the front panel you'll find a narrow bezel on the left and right side and a textured dark grey finish. The front of the phone comes with a physical Home button and two capacitive touch buttons for Menu and Back controls. The different sensors, front camera, notification light and earpiece grill sit above the Note 3's screen.The Note 3 measures 151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3 mm, which is about the same height, half a millimetre narrower and a full millimetre thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The Note 3, at 168g, is a full 15g lighter than last year's model. That's because of the plastic casing on the back.The Galaxy Note 3 comes with a full-HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels packing 386 pixels per inch. That results in sharp and vibrant text and images along with crispy videos.The Note 3 is powered by Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor. It has 3GB RAM onboard, and a Mali T628 MP6 chip for processing graphics. The device comes with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, which makes the overall experience of navigation great. The raw processing power of Note 3 makes launching apps, playing games, scrolling web pages or switching between apps, a breeze. The Galaxy Note 3 offers Chrome in addition to the default browser.The device runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, the latest iteration of the OS (at the time of writing this review) and TouchWiz Nature UX, Samsung's own UI that includes custom apps in addition to a skinned interface. The Galaxy Note 3's UI has been optimised for the S Pen, a stylus that offers enhanced functionality with the device's built-in digitiser.The Note 3 offers motion and gesture-driven controls. The Quick Glance allows you to look at information like missed calls, time and unread message count when you move your hand over the phone. The Air Jump function lets you move up and down web pages and emails when you move your hands. Similarly, the Air Browse feature lets you view the Gallery, web pages, music tracks and memo notes, and even accept calls with the wave of your hand.The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 comes with a 3200mAh battery, which will last a whole day.3. HTC One HTC One is a stunning and beautiful smartphone that has won accolades is every quarter ever since it was launched earlier this year. A near-perfect Android phone, the HTC One has gained popularity due to its top-notch build quality, superior hardware design and specs. The One comes in slim frame and aluminum-plated body – making it a perfect rival to the likes of iPhone 5S and Sony Xperia Z1. It is all aluminium and the only part of the HTC One's shell that isn't obviously made of lightweight metal is the Gorilla Glass screen. HTC says it takes 200 minutes to machine-cut each One device, and that effort is clearly evident throughout the handset's form factor. To build the One, HTC has used a process called zero-gap injection molding to combine an aluminum front and back with polycarbonate on the sides, top and bottom. The zero-gap construction means that you won't find any gaping distance, holes or light leakages. Weighing 5 ounces and measuring 5.4 x 2.7 x 0.36 inches, the HTC One gives a lightweight feeling. Though, it is still larger and heavier than its competitors.The front panel is dominated by the 4.7-inch display. HTC has used Corning Gorilla Glass 2, which makes the phone durable and scratch free. On the front, there are two capacitive touch buttons, along with the usual HTC branding in the middle. The One is surrounded by two aluminium strips on the top and bottom. The strips feature speaker grills, which are part of HTC's Boom Sound set-up to offer enhanced stereo sound with Beats audio and a dedicated sound amplifier.While the volume control on the right-hand side of the phone, the power button resides on the top, and doubles as the infra-red blaster. The HTC One's 4.7-inch, 1920 x 1080 Super LCD3 display boasts rich and stunning visuals. The One comes with a 4MP "UltraPixel" camera. The One's camera promises that these larger pixels can take in up to three times more light, which comes in handy when shooting in dim environments. It's also really fast to apply filters or switch scene modes. Besides, the One's daylight shooting is also phenomenal with great color reproduction and sharp images. In addition, there is another cool feature called Zoe, which takes one second of video before you press the shutter and three seconds after. The images and videos from a given event are then stitched together on the fly in order to create an up to 30-second video which you can export as a MPEG4. It's a cool tool to get you some really great action shots.Packed inside the One's aluminum body is a 1.7-GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor with 2 GB of RAM, making it a really fast Android handset. This makes web browing faster and a faster app launch. The new HTC One runs Android 4.1.2 with full access to the Play Store for apps and media, but it is heavily customised with HTC Sense and a new content-flow feature. HTC calls it BlinkFeed, a Flipboard-like news reader that occupies your entire home screen. With BlinkFeed the HTC One delivers tiles of all of your favourite information, social and media feeds, allowing you to see everything that is going on in your life.After a period of 24 hours of moderate use, the HTC One had around 30 percent battery remaining. The HTC One's 2300mAh battery is non-removable.The phone also includes NFC connectivity. It offers LTE 4G connectivity but doesn't cover Indian 4G bands (2300 MHz).2. LG G2In an attempt to take down Samsung, HTC and Sony, LG recently launched a super-powerful Android phone, called the F2. It combines incredible power with a unique design and a wonderful screen to present one of the most appealing Android phones till date. The most interesting aspect of the LG G2's design is its thin bezels. Rather than placing the power and volume buttons in their usual positions around the edge of the handset, LG has placed them below the camera on the back panel. This has resulted in extremely thin bezels, allowing the 5.2-inch display to fit into a body that's effectively the same size of 5-inch devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S4. However, it may take some time for you to adjust to odd positioning of the buttons on the rear.Built-wise, the back of the LG G2 is made of plastic and sports a textured finish. The power key of the LG G2 comes with a light surrounding it that glows up while making a call. The Volume-up key of the device also doubles up as a shortcut key to launch the Quickmemo app on long press and the Volume-down key acts as a camera shortcut key on long press when the phone is locked. The LG G2 comes with a 5.2-inch 1920 x 1080 display, which gives us a 424 PPI density. One the rear there is a 13MP shooter with a small LED flash. The G2 offers the usual selection of different shooting modes, including auto-shot and HDR. The images taken by the smartphone offer sharp details and great color reproduction. It also performs well in dimly lit locations. Video recording comes in at 1080p HD, with 60 frames per second capture. Moreover, LG practically stole Samsung's camera interface and shooting modes and implanted them on the G2, including the dual-camera feature and the ability to remove unwanted photobombers.The LG G2 runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The company has added its own Optimus UI layer on top, thus changing the look and feel of the interface and enabling users to customise the phone according to their liking. Interesting software tweaks include Smart Screen which that keeps the screen on if the phone detects the user's eyes looking at it - a feature we first saw in the Samsung Galaxy S III. It also offers Smart Video, automatically pausing videos when you look away.The chipset inside is a Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800, with a 2.26GHz quad-core Krait 400. It almost goes without saying, but the G2 is insanely powerful. The Snapdragon 800 chipset can easily handle 3D games with practically no slowdown. Similarly, you can run even two apps side-by-side. The G2 comes with 4G LTE connectivity which means that you get increased network speed. There's also Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi and NFC – the latter of which can be used to make contactless data transfers. Storage consists of either 16GB or 32GB, depending on which model you pick up.The speaker on the LG G2 delivers good quality sound at high volume levels. And unlike, the LG Optimus G Pro, the LG G2 includes FM radio functionality.The G2 comes with a giant 3000mAh battery, and in our usage, it lasted us almost a day and a half with medium usage.The G2 also includes NFC capabilities, and we were able to transfer and receive files through Android Beam, which combines Bluetooth and NFC for sharing data.1. Sony Xperia Z1Sony's flagship smartphone Z1 can be easily dubbed as a smartphone which can get five out of five when reviewed in detail. After all, it offers best of everything that Sony has to offer. It has a powerful processor inside, a higher-spec camera and a new metal chassis.The Sony Xperia Z1 is based on Sony's 'OmniBalance' design philosophy, which has evolved over time. The Z1 is basically a big rectangular glass slab with clean lines that give the phone a minimalistic look. The Z1 is available in three colours – white, black and purple.The front part of Z1 is dominated by a 5-inch display panel. Just above the display screen you'll find the front camera lens, sensors and a notification LED along with Sony branding. The earpiece grill sits at the top edge. Since the Z1 is water and dust resistant, it has all its ports and slots covered with fibreglass flaps to protect the phone. On the right you'll find a lanyard hole, a camera shutter key, a volume rocker key, and a round aluminium power/screen-lock button towards the middle, besides a protective flap that hides the micro-SIM card tray. The back of the phone sports the 20.7-megapixel camera lens, an LED flash and the Sony branding. The back isn't removable, so the microSIM and microSD slots live under hinged covers on the edges of the chassis.The Sony Xperia Z1 sports a 5-inch full-HD display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, with a pixel density of 440ppi. Sony adds in its Triluminos and X-Reality support so that images really do look great. Though, the text and images look sharp and clear, color vibrant; the viewing angles are not that wide. Sunlight legibility of the Xperia Z1's display is also not excellent.The Sony Xperia Z1 sports a 20.7-megapixel camera with a 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS image sensor, Sony's G Lens with 27mm wide angle and f/2.0 aperture, and the BIONZ image processing engine. Sony has worked to make this sensor and the aspherical lens array that goes with it. That results in a capable, powerful camera that is fast, responsive and delivers extremely good results. The camera app has a Superior Auto setting which shoots at 8MP. That means the camera manages lossless zoom. Of course, you can shoot at the full 20MP resolution by switching to Manual. The camera comes with modes like manual, Timeshift burst, Picture Effect, Sweep Panorama, AR Effect, Info-eye, Social Live and Evernote. Images shot with the Z1 in daylight look really good with accurate colour rendering, good contrast and detail. Photos in dim light conditions are good as well. The Xperia Z1 can capture 1080p video at a frame rate of 30fps.The Xperia Z1 is powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM onboard, coupled with an Adreno 330 GPU. There is 16GB of built-in storage, which is expandable by another 64GB via a microSD card. The Z1 comes with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Sony includes its own UI skin on top of the software on the Xperia Z1, the latest version of Xperia UI. The device comes with a slide out menu that lets users to search apps, uninstall them, arrange them according to the order of use and alphabetical order, or go to the Google Play store or Sony Select app store. The Xperia Z1 offers eight themes that change the colour scheme of the phone, along with the homescreen and lockscreen wallpaper. Sony includes its own Xperia keyboard with the Z1, different from the stock Android keyboard. The stock apps include Walkman (for Music), Album, and Movies for media consumption. Other pre-installed apps include Socialife, TrackID, Wisepilot for Xperia, File Commander, Voice Dialer, X4 Video Player and McAfee Security. With Z1 the company also offers the Sony Music Jive app that means you can get free unlimited streaming and downloads from Sony's music catalogue of Bollywood, international and classical music for a period of six months.The Xperia Z1 offers support to ClearAudio+ which gives the sound more clarity while playing music. The phone comes with a giant 3000mAh battery, which with medium or heavy usage can last a full working day.
