New Delhi: In a move to curb the alarming rise in pollution levels in the national capital, the Supreme Court today ordered a ban on registration of Diesel SUVs and cars above 2000cc in the entire national capital region till March 31, saying the decision will not affect the common man.
According to a data by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) around 5.71 lakh diesel vehicles ply daily on the roads of Delhi. The diesel vehicles constitute around 20% of the total 28.86 lakh private vehicles that are registered in Delhi.
Diesel vehicles contribute more towards harming the environment as the pollutants released by a single diesel vehicle are equivalent to the pollutants released by seven petrol vehicles. The diesel-run vehicles also release three times more nitrogen oxide as compared to a petrol-run vehicle.
Here is the list of some of the most popular diesel vehicles which you cannot register in Delhi-NCR till March 31, 2016:
1. Toyota Innova
2. Mahindra Scorpio
3. Chevorlet Tavera
4. Mitsubishi Pajero
5. Various variants of Mercedes
6. Toyota Fortuner
7. Honda CRV
8. Tata Safari
9. Various variants of BMW.
The decision is likely to have an impact mainly on the various models of Mahindra & Mahindra. According to reports, today's decision by the apex court is likely to result in a slump in sales to the tune of 50% for Mahindra vehicles.
