New Delhi: Finnish handset maker Jolla will launch its first smartphone running Sailfish operating system in India today. Jolla, founded by some ex-Nokia employees, has inked an exclusive deal with the online shopping website Snapdeal.com to sell the new smartphone.

The phone is expected to cost somewhere between Rs 28,000-Rs 30,000.

Earlier in July, Jolla announced that it will enter the Indian markets soon. But now after a long wait, the device will be finally available starting September 23. Snapdeal has now put up a countdown on its webpage that shows there are only three days to go until the device goes up for sale.

The Jolla smartphone features a distinct button-less design, and the Sailfish OS gesture-based user experience. Sailfish OS is based on Meego. The smartphone features a 4.5-inch screen and its rear camera is of 8 megapixel. The handset is powered by a dual-core processor and has an internal memory of 16GB.

As of now, Jolla Smartphone is available in the home country Finland, alongside EU, Norway and Switzerland. The smartphone is available to European users via the firm's official stores for EUR 399 (approximately Rs 34,000).

The company's Sailfish OS is touted as an alternative to Android, Windows, Blackberry and Apple's iOS by some analysts.

Jolla founders decided to float their own company after Nokia, then led by Stephen Elop, took the decision to dump 'Meego' operating system in favor of the Windows platform.
