New Delhi: In its new top-of-the-line iPhone 5S model, Apple has introduced a simple and reliable fingerprint reader—one you can confidently use, without a thought, to unlock the device instead of typing in a passcode. It is called Touch ID which also authorizes purchases from Apple's App, iTunes and e-book stores.

The feature also appears to be the biggest step ever in biometric authentication for everyday devices. The software seems to block people if the print is slightly wrong, rather than allow people access if it's somewhat correct. After you set up the Tuch ID, all you need to do is press the home button and let your finger rest there, and the phone just opens itself up. This is definitely the right approach in data security.

Now that Apple's newest phone is finally available around the world, let us take a look at how you can set up Touch ID.

The Touch ID fingerprint sensor is built into the iPhone's familiar, round Home button. To use it, you must first set up a passcode as a backup and then go through a brief training session for each finger you want to use.

Setting up Touch ID

After starting you iPhone 5S, you'll be asked to set up a fingerprint for use with Touch ID. Go to the Settings app under General > Passcode & Fingerprint.

Now chose “Add a Fingerprint.” Next, place your finger on the home button in a vertical direction. While doing so, you'll be asked to lift and rest your finger on the button repeatedly. This is to ensure that the scanner gets every angle and intricacy of your fingerprint documented. In case more than one person are going to share the device, or you want to be able to use different fingers with Touch ID, you can set up and name multiple fingerprint accounts.

When this task is completed, you'll need to do it again with your finger in a horizontal direction. In total, Apple will ask your fingerprint at least 10 times. Remember, Touch ID has 360-degree fingerprint readability. Theoretically, that means no matter how you place your finger on the home button's sensor, it should be able to read your print.

Usage

Once you set the Touch ID, you'll never need to “slide to unlock” again. Now just press the home button to turn the screen on. Then place you firnger on the button without pressing it and wait for the phone to unlock.

At the same time it is easy to make a purchase in iTunes or the App Store with the Touch ID. First, hit the “Purchase” button. Next, use your Touch ID or enter your passcode.

How secure is it?

Apple stores your fingerprint information directly on the A7 processor, precisely the Secure Enclave. The information isn't accessible to any software, servers, or to iCloud. Regular components are unable to access data or activities that occur in the secure areas.
