First impression: Nokia Lumia 2520 is bright, light, and feels great to hold

New Delhi: Nokia has officially unveiled the company's first Windows 8.1 RT tablet, dubbed the Lumia 2520. The tablet takes design cues from Lumia smartphones and is available in red, white, cyan, and black.Nokia 2520 comes with a 10.1-inch display and gives you an almost perfect tablet form factor. The tablet has a smooth polycarbonate unibody chassis that covers the back and wraps around the sides of the tablet. It has a curved back design and is quite comfortable to hold. The overall quality of the tablet is high and solid. In contrast to Surface 2, it feels more compact, thinner, and lighter.The 2520 offers a full HD 1,920x1,080-pixel (218ppi) display. Like the Lumia smartphones, the 2520 uses Nokia's ClearBlack Display filter, that promises less glare when you're outside. In addition the tablet gives excellent viewing angles with an equally good brightness. Similarly, there's hardly any issue with color reproduction. The volume rocker and power/lock button are both on the top edge, with USB 3.0 and HDMI ports on the right side. The left side has the headphone jack and charging port. The tablet comes with a 6.7-megapixel main camera with a f/1.9 Zeiss lens on the back, along with a 2 megapixel front-facing camera. The Lumia 2520 uses the same Nokia Camera app that was just introduced with the Lumia 1520. Nokia's new Storyteller app plots your photos on a map, showing where you were when you took pictures and grouping them accordingly. Nokia wants you to use the 2520 to take pictures on the go, to find maps and directions, and to even do some work with the built-in Office RT suite.Nokia is touting the 2520 as a mobile-focused tablet as the company is offering built-in LTE connectivity. The Lumia 2520 will work with a $149 Surface-style attachment called the Power Keyboard, which gives the tablet two extra USB ports and up to five more hours of battery life. Nokia says the Lumia 2520 should get 11 hours by itself, so it's possible this device will reach 16 hours in total with the cover attached.One the inside, there's a 2.2GHz Quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, that makes multitasking a breeze and the apps seem just as good as the Surface 2. Since it is Windows RT you also get access to the desktop Office apps as part of this device, and that's where Nokia's keyboard is useful. Nokia says that it went with RT since it offers better battery life, wakes up from sleep faster, and helps keep the tablet thinner, since an x86 processor needed to run Windows 8.1 is thicker than an ARM processor. The tablet also has other Microsoft apps, such as Mail, Xbox Music, and SkyDrive, preinstalled. Nokia also added a few of its own apps, including Nokia Camera, which combines Smart Cam and Pro Cam features into one app so you can take motion shots and fine-tune the camera settings at the same time.The 2520 also comes with a video-editing app called Video Director. It allows you to edit individual clips and stitch them together into a longer movie. You can add title screens, sound effects, music, and design elements. Video Director is not available on Lumia phones.The 2520 is much thinner and sleeker than you'd expect and is very comfortable to hold. Nokia has also created a power keyboard of its own which will remind you of the Microsoft Surface Touch Cover. Nokia says the 2520 tablet is designed explicitly to be mobile-first, while the Surface is more about replacing your laptop.AT&T is the first carrier to say it will sell the Lumia 2520, but prices, colors, and sale date are not yet revealed.
