Washington: For the nearly 1.5 billion Facebook users who are left with no option but to "Like" everything up until now no matter how negative — funerals, a lost job, accidents have finally some good news.

After years of pleas from its users, the social media giant has finally confirmed it's working on a "dislike" button that would let user express empathy rather than negativity.

"People have asked about the dislike button for many years. Today is a special day, because today is the day I can say we're working on it and shipping it," chief executive Mark Zuckerberg during a Q& A session at FB headquarters in California.

He said Facebook was "very close" to having it ready for user testing.

Admitting that the users often find themselves in dilemma when they  have to like a sad news, Zuckerberg said "Not every moment is a good moment. If you share something that's sad, like a refugee crisis that touches you or a family member passes away it may not be comfortable to like that post."

But the young entrepreneur wanted to avoid creating a system of reddit-style up and down votes, the latest service would seemingly prefer something that allows the users to express "empathy" with "more options."

This isn't the first time Zuckerberg has considered the idea. In December, he revealed that he had been weighing how to implement a dislike button that would be a "force for good."
