Delhi: The Indira Gandhi International Airport here (IGIA) has become the first airport in the world to be conferred with the British Standards Institution certification for implementation of road traffic safety (RTS) management system, the company that runs the airport said Saturday.




"RTS system at IGIA strives to bring down traffic related road incidents, congestions leading to safe and efficient traffic management," said I. Prabhakara Rao, chief executive, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the company which manages airport operations.

The the company has now achieved the ISO 39001:2012 certification from the British agency.

According to the company, stringent safety norms have been implemented across the 41.4 km of Indira Gandhi International Airport's road network for approaching the airport from the city.

"Our ongoing efforts have resulted in a significant reduction in total count of road accidents from 103 in 2010 to 35 in 2013," Rao added.

The company embarked on the implementation the RTS system in May which was followed by two rounds of in-depth assessment by the standards institution on road network sites.
