New Delhi: Wearable tech is one of the big themes at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Panasonic showed off a prototype, wearable video camera using the new 4K, ultra-high definition video standard. Intel showed off its own wearable computing, including earbuds that monitor your heart rate and an internet-connected baby onesie that tracks a baby's sleep patterns. Among other things, Sony showed off its $1,000, wraparound goggles that shut out the world around you and replace it with a video game screen, concert video or anything else you can see on the screen. The big video draw at CES was of course the 4K (which stands for 4,000 horizontal pixels) TV -- designed for extra-large formats, perhaps 60-inches and above.Not surprisingly, the products themselves serve as the attraction at the CES. The Consumer Electronics Association expects 150,000 gadget-hounds to attend the show. Let us take a look at some of the biggest product launches that happened at CES 2014:Delving deeper into the wearable computing market, Sony unveiled the SmartBand, a waterproof wristband that tracks everything from daily physical activities and nightly sleep patterns to how much you've socialized with friends. The sensor-packed band has no display and interacts wirelessly with an Android smartphone or tablet through an app called Lifelog. It keeps a daily record of activities and recommends actions for the future. SmartBand also informs its wearer of incoming calls and messages by vibrating. Users listening to music can use it to play, pause or skip tracks. Kunimasa Suzuki, executive vice president, Sony Corporation and president and chief executive officer of Sony Mobile Communications, unveils the new Sony Smartband and Core during the Sony news conference at the International Consumer Electronics Show.Sony band's core is removable and can be worn in various ways other than with the wristband. Sony said it would be available this spring, but didn't give pricing. Sony's SmartWatch retails for upward of $70.At CES 2014, Sony launched more pocketable versions of its flagship phone Xperia Z1, the Xperia Z1 Compact. The phone packs the same waterproof, metal and glass design, supercharged quad-core processor, 4G LTE connectivity and 20-megapixel camera as the top-end Xperia Z1, but shrinks the screen down to a much more manageable 4.3-inches. The Z1 Compact has managed to retain not only the impressive Snapdragon 800 CPU, the 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of expandable storage, but also the Z1's 20.7MP shooter capable of 1080p video recording. Connectivity features are the same with a promised Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade. The only thing Sony didn't manage to bring over was the Full-HD screen resolution and 3000mAh battery.LG, expanding its Ultra HD TV line-up, has announced a new premium line-up at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The company showcased the premium UB9800 series 4K Ultra HD TVs at CES 2014, consisting of 65-inch, 79-inch, 84-inch and 98-inch units. LG's new Ultra HD TV models feature 3840x2160 pixels resolution and equip Ultra IPS panels. The latest LG UB9800 4K Ultra HD TV series equips a proprietary chip that the company claims enhances the Ultra HD resolution and also optimises the overall image quality. Further, the UB9800 4K Ultra HD TV series comes with an up-scaling function that LG claims to take the SD, HD and even full-HD content to near Ultra HD quality by rendering it in sharp. The new UB9800 4K Ultra HD TVs come with the Tru-Ultra HD Engine Pro that supports a technique called 4K Motion Estimation Motion Compensation (MEMC), which the South Korean manufacturer claims makes the 4K Ultra HD content appear free of motion blur. The new LG Ultra HD TVs also feature a built-in 4K HEVC 60p decoder.Samsung's 105-inch curved UHD TV is displayed at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Corning is hoping to address the problem of germ and bacteria build up on smartphone glass surfaces with their latest product - Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass 3. Unveiled at CES Corning has demonstrated the germ-busting technology much to the delight of smartphone users, by putting into action a 11-month old idea discussed by them. Corning has infused ions of silver, a common antibacterial agent, directly into the chemically-strengthened glass. Corning says it can rebuff up to 99.9 percent of certain bacteria that are found in abundance on the phone screen. While it doesn't do away with finger smudges, it helps prevent germ build up on the glass surface.Skiers can record their run on the slopes with Liquid Image's snow goggles, which feature a 3-megapixel built-in camera with a wide-angle lens that captures high-definition video.Lenovo revealed its latest Horizon II 27 inch tabletop PC. Essentially a giant Windows 8 tablet, the Horizon is set to replace last year's Horizon. The new design weighs less and features a tapered and thinner profile. Screen resolution has also been bumped up to 2560x1440. Pricing has been announced at US$1499 with Australian pricing to come.Toshiba has unveiled the world's first ever 4K laptops at the ongoing event in Las Vegas. The two laptops, Tecra W50 and the Satellite P50t not only feature full 4K Ultra-HD displays but also run the new Windows 8.1 operating systems. Pricing and availability were not revealed by the company.At the Consumer Electronics Show in Last Vegas, Intel unveiled Jarvis, an oddly shaped Bluetooth headset that wraps around the back of its wearer's ear. The earpiece communicates constantly with a companion Android app to remotely control the smartphone. Jarvis, which can understand voice commands and aptly supported by the Android app, performs all the functions you'd expect from a digital assistant – give directions, set appointments/reminders and look for restaurants among other things.Panasonic, launched the Toughpad FZ-M1 tablet at CES 2014. The rugged tablet, unlike previous iterations, is targeted at the enterprise segment. The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 will be available at a starting price of $2,099 (roughly Rs. 1,30,500) and is expected to hit markets in early spring 2014. The new Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 is based on Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit) and features an IP65 fully sealed fanless design. The tablet comes with a 7-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1200x800 pixels with glove touch technology and also comes with stylus support (optional). The Toughpad FZ-M1 includes a 128GB SSD storage, while also comes with a 256GB SSD option. It is powered by a fourth-generation Intel Core i5 vPro chipset clocked at 1.6GHz alongside 4GB of RAM, which can be further expanded up to 8GB. EyeLock's myris aims to take iris scanning mainstream with a mouse-size device that plugs into your computer's USB port. The idea behind it to log into a site or service through your eye as a password. EyeLock says the iris is a more secure biometric than a fingerprint since the chance of a false positive is much lower.Nvidia unveiled the K1 mobile processor with 192 cores. The new Tegra has the potential to bring console-level games, with stunningly realistic graphics, to mobile devices.
