Beyond PCs, Windows XP also powers ATMs, medical devices, industrial control systems and some of the hardware used for swiping credit cards, an expert said.
On its part, Microsoft has been consistently warning customers about the deadline, but the ATM industry was slow to react to a potential problem. Windows 7 appears to be the main choice to replace the Windows XP machines, but some machines will need to be scrapped entirely and replaced to support the new OS.
Experts are advising users to keep a watchful eye for any suspicious activity in their accounts after the changeover.
