Till date it is believed that only 15 per cent of financial institutions have compensated for the loss of support before the deadline. One major reason for companies being unable to upgrade to different software is the sheer magnitude and the huge cost involved. While new ATMs can be updated remotely, "over the wire," older machines require a physical visit by a technician who makes a hands-on upgrade. These enhancements might be costly for the companies, but the improvements are a win for customers who use these machines on a daily basis. This means users will get an interface they now have with their cell phones and mobile devices. Physical buttons could be eliminated from the terminal. The ATM could offer scrolling and more touch features.
