New Delhi: Android ownership continues to grow. According to third quarter 2013 statistics from International Data Corporation, Android operating system has for the first time accounted for over 80 per cent of all smartphone units shipped.
In the third quarter of 2013, around 211.6 million smartphone units were shipped, out of which Android accounted for 81 per cent of all shipments. The segment showed a growth of 39.9 per cent year-over-year in the third quarter.
The growth in Android's market share indicated that Android's installe dbase will eventually surpass that of iOS. Clearly, Android is on its way to become the most popular smartphone platform in the world.
However, at the same time, Microsoft's Windows Phone OS continued its good show with a 156 per cent year over year growth, mostly backed by Nokia.
The OS now accounts for 3.6 per cent market share with 9.5 million units during the period.
