New Delhi, June 5: E-commerce giant Amazon has finally entered the Indian market, with the launch of its marketplace Amazon.in, offering books, movies and television shows for sale.
Amazon's announcement comes nearly three months after its Vice-President Paul E Misener met Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma, seeking relaxation in FDI policy in retail.
“This marketplace will provide Indian customers with a shopping destination to purchase products from third-party sellers. India represents Amazon's tenth marketplace launch,” the company said in a statement.
In the marketplace, Indians will be allowed to operate as third-party sellers on Amazon's marketplace, letting them list their products for sale to customers.
“With the introduction of the Amazon.in marketplace and launch of two new programmes — ‘Sell on Amazon' and ‘Fulfilment by Amazon' — sellers across India now have access to unlimited and free ‘virtual shelf space' and a scalable, pay-as-you-go fulfilment and customer service offerings,” Amazon said.
