New Delhi, July 1: Airtel has become the first among India's telecom operators to start free roaming in the country, in line with industry regulator Trai's new mandate. For this the service provider would charge Rs 5 per day. For now the offer is valid only for prepaid customers and there is no word about the same being offered to postpaid users as of now.
Other operators are also expected to follow the suit soon. The Birlas-owned Idea Cellular is expected to make an announcement about roaming charges in a day or two, whereas Reliance Communications, the third-biggest operator of India by subscribers, has did not give any clear commitment.
Last month TRAI had reduced ceilings for national roaming calls and SMS and instituted a new regime for providing flexibility to telecom service providers to customise tariffs for national roamers through STVs and Combo Vouchers.
