New Delhi, Jan 23: India's top mobile phone carrier, Bharti Airtel, and Idea Cellular have decided to cut back on various promotional offers. However, at the same time Airtel said there will be no change in the headline tariff across India's 22 telephone circles.
It said in a statement that in most circles the company has reduced promotional benefits and free minutes on both acquisition (which means new SIM cards) and existing usage.
"In most circles, we have reduced promotional benefits and free minutes on both acquisition and existing usage," an Airtel spokesperson said.
Given that India is a price sensitive market, various telecom operators in the country are offering low call rates and freebies to generate new customers while holding onto the old ones.
It is likely that the decision may spur other telcos to follow suit.
