New Delhi: To bring Air India out of crisis and improve its on-time performance (OTP), Aviation secretary V Somasundaram has started convening daily review meeting. The officials are asked to explain the reasons for flight delays on a day to day basis in the meetings.

It was earlier reported that the employees will be held accountable for the delay in the flight. Payment will be deducted from the employees who cause the delay in the flight. The move came after the airlines appeared last in terms of OTP among all domestic players.

Since taking the office Somasundaram has concentrated on improving the performance of the government operated airlines. He has already ordered to fulfill a number of positions lying vacant.

It is the first time that the ministry has directly taken interest in the operations of the national airlines. An AI spokesperson said that the ministry has taken it on itself to monitor the OTP more closely.

The experts are saying that it signals the ministry's displeasure with the nature of affairs at the carrier. An aviation expert Rajji Rai said that the ministry needs to ask the question, otherwise there is no point in spending crores of rupees to keep it alive.
