New Delhi: Facebook-owned WhatsApp has started notifying Nokia’s Symbian users that the app will end support on the platform from December 31 onwards.
A notification has started popping up to all the Symbian users worldwide about the end of WhatsApp support.
‘All About Symbian’, which provides news, reviews and software for Symbian devices, reported about the notification which reads, “Unfortunately, you won’t be able to use WhatsApp after 31/12/2016 because WhatsApp will no longer support your phone.”
WhatsApp had announced ending support for Symbian alongside BlackBerry and smartphones with Android 2.1, Android 2.2 and Windows Phone 7.1 back in February.
According to the blog post, WhatsApp is shutting down its support for these mobile devices as they no longer ‘offer the kind of capabilities that is needed to expand our app’s features in the future.’
WhatsApp was launched back in 2010 and has come a long way since then. It is now end-to-end encrypted, which means no third-party can read or listen in to the conversations. Also it has added a host of new features with ability to share documents, text formatting and more. The social messaging app is reportedly looking to add GIF support to its iOS app.
WhatsApp is also working on a video-calling feature.
To continue using WhatsApp, BlackBerry and Symbian users will have to update to new devices soon.
