Vijay Mallya willing to return to India, ready for honouring commitments

New Delhi: Beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya, who has been in trouble for not repaying loans to banks, said that he up for settling down the entire matter and has a fresh offer for State Bank of India, the main lender.

Mallya, in a United Breweries Ltd (UBL) board meeting by video-conferencing, said that he is willing to return back to India if his security and freedom is assured.

“We expressed concerns over the various issues and Mallya has assured us that he is in serious negotiations with the banks to repay the loans as soon as possible,” said Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, one of the board members who attended the meeting.

“He has said he is willing to return to India to answer all questions but he has to be assured of his safety and freedom,” Kiran added.

India has been hoping to extradite him from the UK, where he has been for the past two months.

However, Britain told India that it cannot deport him, but could consider an extradition request.

Mallya is facing arrest over allegations of defaulting bank loans of over Rs 9,400 crore, through the expeditious route of deportation and not go through the lengthy process of extradition.

On this Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, said  UK does not deport a person who has valid documents. Government looking into all options. He added, they expect you to go through extradition process as per law, sure agencies will make every endeavour under options available.
