Microsoft on Tuesday announced the launch of its Surface Laptop at its Education event in New York on Tuesday, with its software is designed to take on Google Chromebooks and Apple’s MacBooks in the education sector in the US.
Matching Apple’s price range, the Surface Laptop will sell for $999 (approx. Rs 64000) and will ditch the hybrid tablet-laptop format that built the Surface's name.
The Surface Laptop runs Windows 10 S, which loads much faster than the regular Windows 10, and can only run apps from the Windows store. With Windows 1O S you can only run the apps that Microsoft has verified.
The operating system allows for easy mass setups across classrooms by using a USB key. It will be free for any current PCs using Windows Pro.
The new laptop comes with an Intel Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM and 128 GB of SSD storage, and the Microsoft has promised 14 hours of battery life.
The 13-inch laptop weighs less than a 13-inch MacBook Pro at 2.76 pounds (1.25 kg) and comes with a touchscreen display and Surface Pen support.
The Surface Laptop will be available in four colour options – silver, gold, burgundy and grey.
Microsoft Surface Laptop will start at $999 and will go up all the way to $2199 (approx. Rs 1,40,000) depending on the kind of configurations that the customer chooses.
The basic model – Intel Core i5 version with 128GB SSD storage and 4GB RAM along with Intel HD Graphics 620 will cost $999.
The Intel Core i5 with 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM along with Itel HD Graphics 620 will cost $1299 (approx. Rs 83,000).
The Intel Core i7 range with Intel Iris 640 graphics starts at $1599 (approx. Rs 1 lakh) for the 256GB SSD + 8GB RAM version. This one comes only in the colour Platinum.
The 16GB RAM + 512GB SSD version, which is also available in the colour Platinum will cost $2,199.
The Surface Laptop comes with Windows Hello face sign-in camera, 720p HD camera (front-facing).
