New Delhi: Seven months ago, Facebook had launched its Notify app that allowed users to set custom alerts for news, sports and weather among a myriad of other topics. The company has now announced that it would shut down the app.

Facebook had partnered with over 70 publications to send alerts about the day’s top stories, which included CNN, Bloomberg, Vox Media, Fox and Vogue.

Now, the alerts will be moved to Facebook Messenger, which can prove real trouble for Messenger users. "Starting on Wednesday, we will begin integrating Notify functionality into other Facebook products, like Messenger, and will be removing Notify from the App Store,” a Facebook spokesperson told Verge.

Users have never been a fan of being spammed by notifications all day long, but either way it looks like Facebook will not stop sending notifications.

The company also said that with more than 900 million people using Messenger each month, it will be a great opportunity for publishers to reach more people.

If we take a look at the data which was released by the app tracking firm App Annie, ‘Notify’ never caught on in the App Store and was ranked at number 286 in the store's news section. Also, the app only saw around 63,000 downloads, which is relatively low.

However it will be interesting to see how the messenger users take the new notification push in the coming days.
