Arundhati Bhattacharya, Chanda Kochhar among 4 Indians in Forbes’ list of most powerful women

New Delhi: Four Indian women have found a place in the list of Forbes’ Most Powerful Women this year; two of them are bankers, one a media baroness while the fourth owns a biopharmaceutical company.

New Delhi: Four Indian women have found a place in the list of Forbes’ Most Powerful Women this year; two of them are bankers, one a media baroness while the fourth owns a biopharmaceutical company. 

Arundhati Bhattacharya, Chair-Managing director of state-run bank State Bank of India is placed at 25th place in the coveted list. Chanda Kochhar, CEO and Managing Director of ICICI Bank is on 40th place. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairman and Managing Director of Biocon occupies the 77th spot whereas Hindustan Times Group Chairperson Shobhana Bhartia is 93rd most powerful woman in the world. 

Here are challenges faced by India’s power women. 

Arundhati Bhattacharya: As the chief of State Bank of  India, Bhattacharya is facing a huge challenge in form of bad loans. The bank today posted 67 per cent decline in consolidated profit to Rs 1,259.49 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2015-16, on account of higher provisioning for bad loans.

Chanda Kochhar: As the banks in country are struggling with mounting bad loans and NPAs, boss of the country's largest private-sector lender, Kochhar has enourmous challenge ahead of her. Although the bank’s loans are not yet at the alarming level, she has to maintain the performance of her bank. 

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw: Although Biocon is a pioneer in the field of biopharmaceuticals and clinical research, but the company still has a long road ahead in reducing therapy costs of chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer and autoimmune diseases by leveraging India’s cost advantage to deliver affordable healthcare solutions to patients, partners and healthcare systems across the globe.

Shobhana Bhartia: Media baroness Shobhana Bhartia heads one of the largest media groups of the country. Her company Hindsutan Times group owns several newspapers, multiple websites and FM radio stations. In the world’s largest democracy, media has a huge responsibility. She also has to float through the challenges of Digital age. 

Angela Merkel is placed on top of the list of most powerful woman of the world because of her stand on refugee crisis. Presumptive Democratic nominee in US Presidential elections, Hillary Clinton is placed second on the list which also includes Janet Yellen, Melinda Gates, Mary Barra, Christine Lagarde among the top 10.
