Smartphone giant Apple is considering legal action against US president Donald Trump's executive order banning the entry of refugees from the several Muslim-majority countries.
Speaking with Wall Street Journal, Apple CEO Tim Cook said his company is weighing legal action and continuing to press the Trump administration to reverse its executive order on immigration.
The ban is affecting hundreds of Apple employees, many of whom have “heart-wrenching stories” about the ban’s impact on them or their families, the Apple CEO said.
Amazon and Microsoft have already expressed support for a lawsuit against the order in Washington. Apple is reportedly “weighing legal action” in this regard.
Apple could file its own suit, but may instead opt to help fund or support one of the many other actions challenging the legality of Trump’s order
In addition to weighing its legal options, Cook said Apple is still trying to persuade the Trump Administration to reverse course.
“More than any country in the world, this country is strong because of our immigrant background and our capacity and ability as people to welcome people from all kinds of backgrounds. That’s what makes us special,” said Mr. Cook. “We ought to pause and really think deeply through that.”
Despite the intense backlash from Americans as well as the world, the Trump administration is still trying to defend the order, arguing that it is necessary to keep America “safe” from terrorists.
Donald Trump criticized Apple during the presidential campaign, partly for manufacturing its products overseas, but relations appear to have improved since the election.
