Fulfilling the promise made by the company last week, Airtel has announced to give postpaid users 30GB free data as part of its Airtel Surprise offer. The move seems to be an attempt to take on Reliance Jio’s ultra-low cost plans.

Airtel has announced that it will be providing its postpaid users with 30GB of free data for a period of three months, starting March 13.

It must be noted that the monthly cap of the free data offer is set at 10GB. This means that the users who avail this ‘surprise offer’ will get 10 GB of free data for three months, totalling 30GB. Customers can claim the free data offer until March 31.

To avail the offer, Airtel postpaid customers need to download the MyAirtel app from Google Play or App Store. The app shows a dialogue box prompting users to claim their surprise, and clicking on the message will provide you with the 10GB data per month for three months. You will be notified of the additional data via a text message.

Airtel’s ‘surprise’ offer is similar to what Vodafone offered late last year, providing 10GB of data at the price of 1GB. Airtel, however, is providing it for free.

Airtel earlier had the Infinity plan under which there was an option of 3GB data at a price of Rs 345. The pack offered free calls to any network in the country and 4GB data (1GB regular pack benefit and 3GB free data).

The Rs. 345 Airtel plan, however, puts a restriction of 500MB data consumption during the day and the remaining 500MB data between 12am and 6am. The Rs. 549 pack comes with 1GB of data per day without any cap on timings.

Such attractive plans by telecom operators are an effort to stave off Reliance Jio, which is providing 4G data at throwaway prices under its Jio Prime offers.
