New Delhi: 29 June marks the day when the very first Apple iPhone went on sale in the US, back in 2007. Apple had been working on the iPhone, initially code-named as Purple, for three years before its eventual launche. 

Not only did iPhone bring a revolutionary smartphones era, it also helped Apple to achieve a new level of financial success. Nine years on, the Apple iPhone has evolved into a more sophisticated device and is still considered a status symbol.

The technologies that Apple introduced with 1st gen iPhone, have come a long way and the number of tasks the iPhone can perform is mind-boggling.

Here are 9 interesting facts about the first iPhone:

  1. The first iPhone went on sale on Friday, June 29 at 6:00pm (local time) at Apple retail stores across US.
  2. The first launch was conducted in all the 164 Apple retail stores in the US that stayed open until midnight, and customers could purchase up to two iPhones on a first-come, first-served basis.
  3. The first-generation iPhone was launched first in the US only. Then in November 2007, the iPhone went on sale in UK, Germany and France. Then it was introduced in Ireland and Austria in April 2008. The first iPhone in India was launched much later in August 2008.
  4. The first iPhone was priced at $499 (Rs. 33,000 approx.) for 4GB variant and $599 (Rs. 40,000 approx.) for 8GB variant.
  5. The first iPhone did not have an App Store so the users were limited to the pre-loaded software. The app store was launched a year later, which was the first place where you could legally download an application.
  6. Since the iPhone was released in 2007, Apple has owned more than 200 patents relating to the iPhone technology.
  7. Apple did not own the iPhone trademark when it was launched. It was Cisco which had earlier launched a device called the iPhone but that didn’t stop Apple from naming their device iPhone. Later, the two companies came to an understanding and eventually settled their differences.
  8. In the first year itself Apple, sold 6.1 million iPhones.
  9. Time Magazine called iPhone the invention of the year in 2007.
