Step towards Digital India: 5 things to know about PM Modi's Dream App, UMANG

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government is all set to launch its master application, which will have all the government services integrated. 

The app will have almost 200 government services including passport services, land records, income tax, e-Post, Women safety, and much more. The government will most likely bring this platform to people with an app, an SMS service, and IVR (Interactive Voice Response).

Also the government has uploaded a 207 paged proposal document of the app on the ‘The Department of Electronics and Information Technology’ (DeiTY) website to invite agencies for app development and maintenance. 

Here are the 5 things which you should know about the new mother of all apps:

What is UMANG all about: Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance, which is also known as UMANG, is being developed by the union ministry of communications and information technology’s national e-governance division (NeGD).

Importance of the app, UMANG: UMANG will have almost 200 services, which are National scholarship, Healthcare applications, Passport Seva, Women Safety (Nirbhaya),  E-Post, Crime and criminal tracking, Network and systems, Commercial tax/GST, Income tax, CBSE/State education boards, E-Municipality, IRCTC, Utility bills, Mother and child tracking, Public distribution system, Transport Vahan/Sarathi, e-Court, m-Kisan, Land records, PF/NPS. The government has planned to have 50 services this year and slowly come up with all the 200 services in three years.

How will it work: The app is being designed in such a manner that it will be able to maintain or remember every citizens personal details, preferences and data, which will be required to access department services without having to re-enter every time. The identification documents will include Aadhar Card, PayGov and DigiLocker.

How can the app be accessed: The app will be available to anyone using a smartphone and Internet. Discussions are going on that these services should be made available on SMS and a single toll-free number for those not having smartphone and internet. Also the app can be accessed in 13 languages including English, Hindi, Bengali and more.

Availability: The project has been started nearly eight months ago, but the government is still looking for a private agency which it can work together for UMANG. As the government is now keen to roll out 50 services on the app this year, which is a good news and UMANG will be launched soon.
