Mythological reasons
It is told in the scriptures that Mata Lakshmi started tying Kalava. When Lord Vishnu had measured the earth in three steps in the Baman avatar, being pleased with the generosity of King Bali, he let him live paatal lok. Then King Bali prayed to Lord Vishnu that he too should come and stay him in paatal lok. Vishnu ji was pleased and accepted his request. After this, Mata Lakshmi reached paatal look in disguise to bring back Lord Vishnu from there and started crying in front of Bali that I have no brother. After this Bali said that from today I am your brother. On this, Mata Lakshmi tied Kalava to King Bali as a protection thread and made him her brother. After this, as a gift, Lord Vishnu was asked from him. Since then, kalava is tied as a defence thread.
