OSHAWA, Ontario (AP) — No. 1 overall pick Rasmus Dahlin scored his first goal for Buffalo, Jeff Skinner connected twice and the Sabres beat the New York Islanders 5-4 in exhibition play Friday night at Tribute Communities Centre.

Brendan Guhle also Casey Nelson scored for Buffalo, and Carter Hutton made 27 saves.

Anders Lee scored twice, and Josh Bailey and Ryan Pulock added goals for the Islanders.

The neutral-site game was the last preseason contest for both teams. It was scheduled in December 2017 with the hope that John Tavares would return with the Islanders to play in the arena where his junior career began. But Tavares signed with Toronto this year.

MAPLE LEAFS 6, RED WINGS 2

At Toronto, Jake Gardiner, John Tavares and Patrick Marleau scored power-play goals and Par Lindholm added a short-handed goal — all in a 3:54 span in the second period — to help Toronto improve to 6-1-0.

Gardiner added another goal in the third period and Nazem Kadri also scored for the Maple Leafs. Gustav Nyquist and Dylan Larkin replied for Detroit The teams will close out the preseason schedules Saturday night in Detroit.

HURRICANES 5, CAPITALS 4, OT

At Washington, Sebastian Aho scored his second goal of the game 19 seconds into overtime to lift Carolina past Washington.

Teuvo Teravainen had a goal and three assists, Andrei Svechnikov and Valentin Zykov also scored, and Petr Mrazek made 25 saves.

Alex Ovechkin scored twice for the Capitals, Jayson Megna and Andre Burakovsky added goals, and Braden Holtby made 31 saves.

BLUE JACKETS 7, PENGUINS 6

At Columbus, Ohio, Oliver Bjorkstrand broke tie with 3:56 left to help Columbus beat Pittsburgh.

Artemi Panarin had two goals and two assists, Cam Atkinson added a goal and three assists, Zach Werenski had four assists, and Boone Jenner and Nick Foligno also scored.

Derick Brassard led the Penguins with two goals and an assist. Sidney Crosby, Patric Hornqvist, Carl Hagelin and Bryan Rust also scored.

AVALANCHE 4, WILD 3, OT

At Denver, Mikko Rantanen scored on a power play 1:29 into overtime to lift Colorado past Minnesota.

Alex Kerfoot, Tyson Jost and Matt Calvert also scored, and Philipp Grubauer made 21 saves.

Nino Niederreiter and Jason Zucker scored for Minnesota in the third to force overtime. Mikael Granlund also scored, and Alex Stalock and Andrew Hammond split time in goal.

BLUES 3, STARS 1

At St. Louis, Jake Allen made 21 saves in St. Louis' victory over Dallas.

Ryan O'Reilly, Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko scored. Blake Comeau scored for Dallas, and Landon Bow stopped 23 shots.
