TOKYO (AP) — The bicultural governor of Japan's Okinawa island says he will meet with Americans next week to convey to them residents' frustration from hosting U.S. military bases on the southern island.

Denny Tamaki said Friday in Tokyo he will meet with U.S. government officials in Washington and speak at New York University during his Nov. 11-16 trip.

Tamaki took office Oct. 4 after campaigning for a disputed U.S. base on Okinawa to be scrapped and the American military presence reduced. He says Americans whose military uses the bases should listen to Okinawans.

Japan's central government recently resumed construction work at the disputed base despite Okinawans' opposition.
