BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota elections officials are requiring a street address to vote, and are appealing to leaders of the state's American Indian tribes to ensure their members have one.

Secretary of State Al Jaeger's office notified the state's five tribes by email late Friday outlining voting ID requirements. They include the condition that voters must have a current street address, which some American Indians argue are not assigned on reservations. The state says obtaining a street address is a simple process.

Elections officials sent the email hours after lawyers for some Native Americans appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, saying the state's voter ID requirements will lead to confusion in the upcoming election.

Native American voters could be crucial in a tight North Dakota U.S. Senate race.
