SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — A Salvadoran woman whose recovery from a life-threatening condition was deemed a miracle, paving the way for the upcoming canonization of the late Roman Catholic Archbishop Oscar Romero, says she's convinced he is a saint.

Cecilia Maribel Flores describes Romero as a pastor who "defended his flock," the poorest and most needy.

She's traveling to attend the Oct. 14 canonization and said Friday she hopes to meet Pope Francis.

Romero was assassinated in 1980 while celebrating Mass at a hospital chapel, by a gunman contracted by right-wing death squads.

The archbishop is already known to many as "Saint Romero of the Americas." He was beatified in 2015, just months before Flores' near-death illness.
