MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is telling an international conference that the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi "undermines regional stability" and he warned that the State Department will take further action in response to the killing.
In remarks prepared for delivery, Mattis never mentioned Saudi Arabia in connection with Khashoggi's brutal murder at the kingdom's consulate in Turkey. But he notes that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo revoked visas of Saudis implicated in the killing, and says additional measures will be taken.
Turkish officials say that a Saudi team of 15 men tortured, killed and dismembered the writer and that Saudi officials had planned the killing for days. The kingdom initially said it knew nothing about what happened to Khashoggi, but on Thursday said evidence shows the killing was premeditated.
