MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) — Former Nicaraguan President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro has been hospitalized after suffering what family members described as "a cerebrovascular accident."

A statement from her family issued late Monday said the 88-year-old Chamorro was in intensive care in "delicate condition" at the Vivian Pellas Metropolitan Hospital. It said she had a cerebral embolism.

Nicaragua's first female president was thrust into politics by her husband's assassination and stunned the world by ousting the ruling Sandinista party in presidential elections and later helping end the country's civil war.

Chamorro governed Nicaragua from 1990 to 1997.

Chamorro moved away from public life since 2011, when it became known that she suffered from a brain tumor.
