BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Authorities in Colombia's capital have opened a camp for Venezuelan migrants as the number fleeing their nation's economic and humanitarian crisis continues to rise.
Officials transported Venezuelans who had been camped outside a bus terminal in Bogota to a new space Tuesday where they will be allowed to stay in bright yellow tents with cots.
Neighbors living near the new camp protested and tried to block Venezuelans from entering, saying they fear their arrival will spread crime and disease.
Colombia has received an estimated 1.3 million Venezuelans, more than any other nation. Officials were initially reluctant to open camps for homeless arrivals but now say they have no choice.
Venezuelans were hesitant to enter the camp, fearful that conditions inside would be worse than sleeping outside.
